• The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, presented the Sports and Adventure Awards 2024 at a Rashtrapati Bhavan function on January 17, 2025.
• The National Sports Award includes the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Arjuna Awards Lifetime Award, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy, and the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar.
• Except for the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar, all prizes are given to individual sports persons or coaches.
• The government of India instituted the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 1993-94, given since 2004 with the National Sports Award.
• Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna is the highest sports award, previously the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, renamed in 2021.
• Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award winners include Gukesh D (Chess), Harmanpreet Singh (Hockey), Praveen Kumar (Para-Athletics), and Manu Bhaker (Shooting).
• Arjuna Awards (Lifetime) winners include Sucha Singh (Athletics) and Murlikant Petkar (Para-Swimming).
• President Droupadi Murmu launched cow induction, gift milk, and market support initiatives by NDDB for OMFED.
• The NDDB's Gift milk initiative aims to combat malnutrition by providing 200 ml of flavored milk fortified with Vitamin A & D to schoolchildren daily.
• Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the launch of Kamadhenu Yojana which provides 70% financial aid to farmers for rearing indigenous cattle breeds.
• President Droupadi Murmu presented the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha on January 10, 2025.
• The 18th PBD Convention was held from January 8-10, 2025, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 8.
• Since 2003, Pravasi Divas has been observed on January 9, marking Mahatma Gandhi's return to India from South Africa in 1915.
• The Ministry of External Affairs organizes the PBD Convention, held every two years since 2015.
• The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman honors NRIs, PIOs, and their institutions for exemplary achievements in India or abroad.
• The Vice-President of India heads the Jury-cum-Awards committee, with the Minister for External Affairs as vice-chairman.
• The President of India confers the award on the last day of the PBD Convention.
• Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of Trinidad & Tobago, and 26 others received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman at the 18th PBD convention.
• Awardees also included Ajay Rane (Australia), Marialena Joan Fernandes (Austria), Swami Sanyuktanand (Fiji), Saraswati Vidya Niketan (Guyana), Lekh Raj Juneja (Japan), Prem Kumar (Kyrgyz Republic), and Soukthavy Chowdhury (Laos).
• President Droupadi Murmu attended the golden jubilee celebrations of NIMHANS in Bengaluru on January 3, 2025.
• She highlighted that the Tele-MANAS platform has benefited nearly 70 lakh people through its 53 centers.
• NIMHANS is the apex center for mental health and neuroscience education, operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
• The Mental Hospital of Mysore and the All-India Institute of Mental Health were combined on December 27, 1974, to form NIMHANS.
• Varur, Karnataka now features a 405-foot Sumeru Hills replica, a symbol of Jain cosmology, constructed completed at Navagraha Jain Shrine.
• This will be unveiled during the Panchakalyana Mahotsava, an 11-day Jain celebration starting January 15.
• The Varur shrine, or Navagraha Teertha, has statues of nine Jain Gods which includes Lord Parshwanath which has a height of 120 feet.
