Study Notes
Split Brain
- Patients with a severed corpus callosum (split brain) are unable to verbally describe objects presented to their right visual field because the information is processed in the left hemisphere, which is also responsible for language.
Satiety and Eating
- The ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) contains neurons responsible for satiety and the cessation of eating.
Left Frontal Lobe Stroke
- Patient MQ may experience deficits in language production (Broca's aphasia), motor control on the right side of her body, planning, and executive function.
Action Potentials
- During an action potential, the influx of sodium ions depolarizes the membrane, triggering the opening of potassium channels and leading to repolarization.
- If there were no gaps between myelin segments (nodes of Ranvier), the action potential would not be able to regenerate and would eventually die out, preventing the signal from traveling down the axon.
Brain Mapping Methods
- Structural imaging methods like MRI and CT have good spatial resolution but poor temporal resolution. They provide detailed structural information but cannot capture dynamic brain activity.
Central Nervous System
- The central nervous system (CNS) is comprised of the brain and spinal cord and is responsible for processing information and coordinating bodily functions.
- The CNS is NOT directly responsible for voluntary movement; that function is controlled by the peripheral nervous system.
Anterograde Amnesia
- Patient AB's anterograde amnesia suggests damage to the hippocampus, a structure critical for forming new memories.
Neuron Distribution
- The cerebral cortex, the outermost layer of the brain, is the location with the densest concentration of neurons.
Antagonists
- An antagonist is a drug that binds to a receptor and prevents the natural neurotransmitter from binding, blocking its action.

Description
Test your knowledge on the effects of split brain surgery, particularly in relation to visual processing. This quiz will explore what a patient after a callosotomy cannot do when presented with stimuli in the right visual field.
