Study Notes
Spinal Nerve Formation
- Spinal nerves connect to the spinal cord through two roots: the posterior/dorsal root and the anterior/ventral root
- The posterior root contains sensory fibers, carrying information from the body to the spinal cord
- The anterior root contains motor fibers, carrying commands from the spinal cord to muscles
- The posterior root ganglion, located on the posterior root, houses the cell bodies of sensory neurons
- Spinal nerves are formed by the union of the posterior and anterior roots at the intervertebral foramina
- After exiting the intervertebral foramen, each spinal nerve divides into two branches: the posterior (dorsal) ramus and the anterior (ventral) ramus
- The posterior ramus innervates the muscles and skin of the back
Spinal Nerve Anatomy & Embryology
- The anterior (ventral) ramus supplies muscles and structures of the limbs, as well as the skin of the lateral and anterior trunk
- Most anterior rami, except for the thoracic nerves (T2-T12), form nerve plexuses
Nerve Plexuses
- Cervical plexus (C1-C4)
- Brachial plexus (C5-C8 and T1)
- Lumbar plexus (L1-L4)
- Sacral plexus (S1-S4 and contributions from L4-L5)
- Coccygeal plexus (S4, S5, and Cox1)
