8 Questions
What is the immediate outcome after the spinal nerve trunk leaves the intervertebral foramen?
It divides into two primary rami (anterior and posterior)
What is the main characteristic of the spinal nerve trunk?
It is very short and immediately divides into two primary rami
What happens at the corresponding intervertebral foramen?
The ventral and dorsal roots unite to form the spinal nerve trunk
What type of nerves do the primary rami supply?
Both rami are mixed and supply anterior and posterior aspects of the body
In the cervical region, which vertebral spine is opposite to the C6 segment?
C5
Which vertebrae are opposite to the T11 spine?
L2 to L5
What results in the gradual lengthening of the lumbar and sacral nerve roots?
Spinal cord and vertebral canal gap
Where does the C8 nerve emerge in relation to the vertebra?
Above T1
Study Notes
Spinal Nerve Trunk
- After leaving the intervertebral foramen, the spinal nerve trunk immediately divides into dorsal and ventral rami.
- The main characteristic of the spinal nerve trunk is that it is a mixed nerve, containing both sensory and motor fibers.
Intervertebral Foramen
- At the corresponding intervertebral foramen, the spinal nerve trunk exits the vertebral column.
Primary Rami
- The primary rami supply the dorsal and ventral rami.
Cervical Region
- In the cervical region, the C7 vertebra is opposite to the C6 segment.
Thoracic Region
- The T11 spine is opposite to the T11 and T12 vertebrae.
Lumbar and Sacral Nerve Roots
- The gradual lengthening of the lumbar and sacral nerve roots results from the vertebral column growing faster than the spinal cord.
- The C8 nerve emerges below the C7 vertebra in relation to the vertebra.
Test your knowledge of the anatomy of spinal nerves and their corresponding intervertebral foramen, as well as the division and function of the primary rami.
