Mercury and aneroid

At what point during the measurement process can the continuous but turbulent flow be heard?

When the cuff pressure equals diastolic pressure

What happens when the cuff pressure equals the systolic (higher) pressure?

The Korotkoff sounds can be heard

What component of the sphygmomanometer is used to control the release of pressure?

Study Notes

Sphygmomanometer

  • Measures blood pressure
  • Two types of pressure gauges used:
    • Mercury manometers
    • Aneroid
  • Digital type is also used

Components of Sphygmomanometer

  • Pump
  • Release valve
  • Stethoscope
  • Manometer
  • Air sack
  • Inflatable cuff (placed on upper arm)
  • Sound sensor (stethoscope)

Measurement of Blood Pressure

  • Inflatable cuff is inflated until blood can't flow
  • Pressure is released until Korotkoff sounds are heard (systolic pressure)
  • Continuous but turbulent flow is heard when cuff pressure equals diastolic pressure

Test your knowledge on sphygmomanometers, the most common clinical instrument used in measuring blood pressure. Learn about the different types of pressure gauges - mercury manometers, aneroid gauges, and digital gauges, as well as the process of measuring blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer.
