Study Notes

Spare Factors

  • Spare factors are based on projected first sortie logistics losses.
  • First sortie is defined as a sortie flown by an aircraft that has not previously flown for the day, regardless of scheduled take-off time.
  • Spare computation is based on unit historical data from previous similar flying months, using a minimum of 4 years historical data to ensure seasonal variations are included.
  • The formula for computing spare factors is Historical First Sortie Cancellation divided by Historical Sorties Scheduled.

Attrition Factors

  • Attrition factors are used to compensate for non-unit controlled factors, whereas spares are used to compensate for unit controlled factors.
  • Attrition factors will be computed for and applied to each flying squadron/AMU.
  • Attrition factors are computed using unit historical data from previous similar flying months, considering as much historical data as necessary to ensure seasonal variations are included.
  • The formula for computing the attrition factor is Historical Sorties Lost divided by Historical Sorties Scheduled.
  • Attrition factors represent a historical percentage of scheduled sorties lost to causes outside unit control.

Attrition Computation and Application

  • Attrition will be computed monthly for the entire fiscal year by MMA.
  • The monthly schedule will identify attrition sorties, and adjustments to the schedule should be made if attrition is less or more than planned.
  • Attrition sorties are not substitutes for capability shortfalls, but are additive to the contract to ensure mission goals are met.
  • A sortie lost will normally be flown in the week/month the loss occurred.

Weather Attrition

  • Weather attrition sorties will only be used when sorties are lost because of weather.
  • Weather attrition sorties will not be carried over into another month.
  • The prorated weather attrition factor is computed by dividing the number of weather losses by the O&M days.
