Present Subjunctive in Spanish

Formation

  • The present subjunctive is formed differently from the present indicative, but similarly to the present perfect subjunctive.
  • The present subjunctive is formed by dropping the -o ending from the yo form of the present indicative and adding the following endings:
    • -e for -ar verbs
    • -a for -er and -ir verbs
    • -a for stem-changing verbs
  • Examples:
    • hablar (to speak): habl-e
    • comer (to eat): com-a
    • vivir (to live): viv-a

Uses

  • The present subjunctive is used to express doubt, uncertainty, or possibility about a situation or event.
  • It is often used in clauses that begin with words like:
    • espero que (I hope that)
    • es posible que (it's possible that)
    • es improbable que (it's unlikely that)
    • dudo que (I doubt that)
  • It is also used in clauses that express emotion or opinion:
