Study Notes

The Solar System

  • The solar system consists of the Sun and eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
  • Pluto was previously considered a planet but is now classified as a dwarf planet.
  • The planets move around the Sun in fixed paths called orbits.

Mercury

  • Mercury is the nearest planet to the Sun, taking about 88 days to complete one orbit.

Venus

  • Venus is often referred to as "Earth's twin" due to its similar size and shape to Earth.

Earth

  • Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only planet with conditions suitable to support life.
  • It is the fifth-largest planet and has a slightly flattened shape at the poles.
  • The Earth's surface is about two-thirds water, making it appear blue from space.

The Moon

  • The Moon is Earth's satellite, with a diameter about one-quarter that of Earth.
  • It takes about 27 days to orbit the Earth and completes one spin in the same time, making only one side visible from Earth.
  • The Moon has mountains, plains, and depressions on its surface, but no conditions suitable for life.

Asteroids and Meteoroids

  • Asteroids are small bodies that orbit the Sun, found between Mars and Jupiter's orbits.
  • Meteoroids are small pieces of rock that orbit the Sun and can enter the Earth's atmosphere, producing a flash of light.
  • If a meteoroid survives entry, it becomes a meteorite and can create a hollow on impact.

Galaxies

  • A galaxy is a huge system of billions of stars, dust, and gases.
  • The Milky Way galaxy is just one of millions of galaxies that make up the Universe.

Celestial Bodies

  • Celestial bodies include the Sun, Moon, stars, and other objects that shine in the night sky.
  • Stars are celestial bodies with their own heat and light, including the Sun.

Constellations

  • Constellations are patterns formed by different groups of stars in the night sky.

Test your knowledge on the order of planets in the solar system and their characteristics like distances from the sun, orbits, and unique features. From Mercury to Neptune, learn about each planet's position and interesting facts.
