Study Notes
The Sociological Perspective
- Sociology is the systematic study of human society, focusing on seeing the general in the particular, the strange in the familiar, and individuality in social context.
Seeing Sociologically
- Sociologists identify general patterns in the behavior of particular people, recognizing that society acts differently on individuals based on categories such as age, gender, income, and ethnicity.
- Emile Durkheim's research on suicide shows that society affects personal choices, with men, Protestants, the wealthy, and the unmarried being more likely to take their own lives, while women, Catholics, Jewish people, the poor, and the married are less likely to do so.
- Recent statistics show that suicide is almost three times as common for men than for women.
Importance of a Global Perspective
- Where we live shapes our lives, and societies throughout the world are increasingly interconnected through technology and economics.
- Global events can affect life in Canada, and many problems faced in Canada are more serious elsewhere in the world.
Origins of Sociology
- Social change, industrial technology, growth of cities, and new ideas about democracy and political rights promote a new awareness of society.
- Comte's Stages: theological, metaphysical, and scientific, led to positivism, a way of understanding based on science.
