Soccer History and Rules
- Soccer's origins date back to around 1700 B.C.
- English players refined the game
- Basic rules have remained largely unchanged since the turn of the century.
Soccer Game
- Played by two teams of eleven players
- Each team member plays 45 minutes
- No timeouts
- Continuous play (except for injuries)
- Injury time added by the referee for stoppages
- No overtime in international matches
Soccer Field
- Minimum size: 110 yards long by 70 yards wide
- Maximum size: 120 yards long by 80 yards wide
- Dimensions are slightly larger than American football field
Soccer Fouls and Misconduct
- Direct Free Kicks: Awarded for fouling like tripping, holding, handball, kicking, jumping, charging, pushing, striking, or spitting at opponents.
- Indirect Free Kicks: Awarded for dangerous play, charging, or obstruction.
Soccer Positions
- Forwards/Strikers: 2-4 offensive players aiming to score goals.
- Midfielders: 2-4 players who mostly cover the middle of the field, playing both offensively and defensively.
- Defenders: Defensive players who guard the opposing forwards and help the goalie.
- Goalie: The only player allowed to use their hands. Cannot use their hands outside the penalty area
Playing the Ball
- Any part of the body (except arms and hands), like feet, head, thighs, and chest can be used to control or pass.
Out-of-Play
- Ball is out of play when it crosses the goal lines or touchlines wholly.
- Also, when halted by the referee.
- Including after rebounding off a goal post or crossbar or is out of field from corner flag post/ touchline..
Throw In
- Awarded when a ball is out of play.
- Ball is taken along the touchline, at the point where it left the playing area.
