    Study Notes

    Surface Mount Devices (SMD)

    • SMD offers resistance to shock, vibration, and interference.
    • SMD is easy to realize semi-automatic and automatic assembly, and most SMD adopts tape and reel, tube, or tray packaging.
    • SMD can achieve high-density assembly, and its solder joint failure rate is less than ten parts per million.
    • SMD mounting can increase the operating frequency of electronic circuits to 3000MHz (500MHz for through-hole insertion).

    Resistors

    • There are two basic types of resistors: Linear resistor and Nonlinear resistor.
    • Fixed resistors have a specific value and these values cannot be changed.
    • Types of fixed resistors: Carbon composition resistors, wire wound resistors, thin film resistors, thick film resistors.
    • Variable resistors do not have a specific value and the values can be changed with the help of dial, knob, and screw.

    Surface Mount Technology (SMT)

    • SMT offers high-density, high-reliability, miniaturization, low-cost, and production automation of electronic product assembly.
    • SMT assembly density is high because electronic products can be designed to be smaller and lighter.
    • The volume and weight of SMT components are only about 1/10 of that of traditional plug-in components.

    Characteristics of SMD

    • SMD has a small size, lightweight, short leads or no leads, and high reliability.
    • Aluminum alloys are used to obtain red, orange, and yellow light, and indium alloys are used to get green, blue, and white light.

    Light Emitting Diodes (LED)

    • LEDs are made from exotic semiconductor compounds such as Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), Gallium Phosphide (GaP), Gallium Arsenide Phosphide (GaAsP), Silicon Carbide (SiC), or Gallium Indium Nitride (GaInN).
    • Different LED compounds emit light in specific regions of the visible light spectrum and therefore produce different intensity levels.
    • The exact choice of the semiconductor material used will determine the overall wavelength of the photon light emissions and therefore the resulting color of the light emitted.

    LED Colors

    • The color of an LED is determined by the material used in the semiconducting element.
    • The two primary materials used in LEDs are aluminum gallium indium phosphide alloys and indium gallium nitride alloys.

    RGB LED

    • An RGB LED produces white light by mixing 3 different colors like RGB- Red, Green, and Blue.
    • The structure of Common Anode and Common Cathode LED consists of 4 terminals, where the first terminal is “R” the second terminal is “Anode +” or “Cathode –“, the third terminal is “G” and the fourth terminal is “B”.
