- Employability emphasizes human flexibility, adaptability, and lifelong learning (Beukes, 2009; Savickas, 2009; Spill, 2002; Van der Heijden, 2002)
- Employability is a set of skills, knowledge, understanding, and attributes that increase the likelihood of securing satisfying and successful employment (Pool and Sewell, 2007)
- Employability development includes five stages: Get your feet on the ground, Golden goals, Creative learning, Talk the Talk, and Walk the Walk (Beukes, 2009)
- Get your feet on the ground stage: individuals audit their competencies in relation to labor demands and employment opportunities to develop a goal orientation (Beukes, 2009; Linnenbrink & Pintrich, 2000)
- Individuals should gain insight into their interests, skills, and competencies and labor market information (Spill, 2002; McQuaid, Green, & Danson, 2005)
- The National Career Advice Portal (NCAP) will provide online assessments and learning pathways to assist individuals in conducting a realistic audit and alignment (SAQA and DHET, expected launch at the end of March 2013)
- Golden goals stage: individuals set specific career goals to effectively capture and assess progress in a quantifiable manner (Beukes, 2009; Linnenbrink & Pintrich, 2000)
- Goals should follow a basic framework for development (Linnenbrink & Pintrich, 2000)
- Creative learning stage: individuals engage in formal and informal learning to acquire new skills and knowledge (Beukes, 2009)
