Study Notes
Norma Frontalis
- Composed of:
- Frontal bone, nasal bones, maxilla (body & 5 processes), zygoma, and mandible.
- Key sutures include:
- Frontonasal, frontomaxillary, frontozymatic, zygomaticomaxillary, internasal, and intermaxillary.
- Openings and foramina:
- Orbital cavity, anterior nasal aperture, supraorbital foramen, infraorbital foramen, and mental foramen.
- Landmarks:
- Frontal eminence: Most prominent part of the frontal bone; site of ossification.
- Metopic suture: Divides frontal bone into halves; typically ossified by age 8; remnants found in 9% of the population.
- Superciliary arch: Ridge above medial aspect of orbital cavity.
- Glabella: Elevation between superciliary arches.
- Nasion: Depression below glabella; meets frontonasal and internasal sutures.
- Anterior nasal spine: Median projection at upper intermaxillary suture.
- Alveolar arch of maxilla: Contains sockets for upper teeth.
- Supraorbital foramen (or notch): Located at junction of medial 1/3 and lateral 2/3 of superior orbital margin.
- Infraorbital foramen: Positioned 1 cm below the inferior orbital margin.
- Mental foramen: Centrally located on the mandible.
Norma Lateralis
- Comprised of:
- Nasal, frontal, parietal, occipital bones above; maxilla, zygoma, greater wing of sphenoid bone, and squamous part of temporal bone below.
- Parts of temporal bone include:
- Squamous, mastoid, styloid, tympanic (external auditory opening), and zygomatic processes.
- Key sutures associated with norma lateralis:
- Includes those from norma frontalis plus coronal, squamous, parietomastoid, occipitomastoid, lambdoid, sphenofrontal, sphenoparietal, sphenotemporal, and parietomastoid sutures.
- Openings and foramina:
- Orbital cavity, supraorbital, infraorbital, mental, and zygomaticofacial foramina.
- Landmarks:
- Zygomatic arch: Formed by temporal process of zygoma and zygomatic process of temporal bone; features 2 borders and 2 surfaces.
- External acoustic meatus: Located below the zygomatic arch's root.
-
Temporal lines:
- Superior temporal line: Fades backward.
- Inferior temporal line: Curves backward then forwards, continues with the zygomatic arch.
