Skin Infections

  • Skin and soft tissue infections can be caused by either direct penetration of a pathogen or hematogenous spread of the pathogen from the initial site.

Characteristics of Skin Infections

  • Skin infections can be classified into superficial or deep infections based on the anatomical level at which they occur.
  • Initial symptoms of skin infections include:
    • Redness
    • Pain or tenderness
    • Swelling
    • Warmth
    • Blisters

Important Causes of Skin Infections

  • Group A Streptococci
  • Staphylococci
  • Anaerobic bacteria are particularly important causes of more serious forms of skin infections.
