Skeletal System

The skeletal system is a critical component of the human body, responsible for providing support, facilitating movement, protecting internal organs, producing blood cells, and storing minerals. Bones

Cartilage

Functions of the Skeletal System

The skeletal system performs several essential functions for the body. It:

  • Stores and releases minerals: The bone matrix acts as a reservoir for minerals like calcium and phosphorus, which can be released back into the bloodstream to maintain normal physiological processes. Calcium ions are essential for muscle contractions and nerve impulse transmission.
  • Energy storage: Fat stored in bone marrow can serve as a source of energy when needed.

Musculoskeletal System

The musculoskeletal system is a complex interplay of the muscular and skeletal systems, working together to provide the body with movement, stability, shape, and support. Muscles act against gravity and stabilize the body during standing or walking, and heat production is a byproduct of muscle contraction. Bones provide a framework for muscle attachment and transmit the forces produced when muscles contract.
