Digestive System

• The digestive system is a complex system that breaks down food into nutrients for absorption and utilization by the body
• It consists of:
  • Mouth (mechanical breakdown of food)
  • Esophagus (food transit)
  • Stomach (chemical breakdown of food)
  • Small intestine (nutrient absorption)
  • Large intestine (water absorption and waste elimination)

Intestines

• Small intestine:
  • Also known as the small bowel
  • About 6 meters long and 2.5 cm in diameter
  • Divided into three parts: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
  • Responsible for most of the nutrient absorption
• Large intestine:
  • Also known as the colon
  • About 1.5 meters long and 7.5 cm in diameter
  • Divided into four parts: ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon
  • Responsible for water absorption and waste elimination

Gastrointestinal Tract

• The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a muscular tube that extends from the mouth to the anus
• It is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from food
• The GI tract is lined with mucosa, a layer of mucous membrane that secretes digestive enzymes and absorbs nutrients
• The GI tract is divided into:
  • Upper GI tract: mouth, esophagus, stomach, and duodenum
  • Lower GI tract: small intestine, large intestine, and anus

Pancreas

• The pancreas is a gland located behind the stomach
• It has two main functions:
  • Exocrine function: secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
  • Endocrine function: produces hormones such as insulin and glucagon to regulate blood sugar levels
• The pancreas is divided into:
  • Exocrine pancreas: produces digestive enzymes
  • Endocrine pancreas: produces hormones

Liver Function

• The liver is the largest organ in the abdominal cavity
• It has multiple functions, including:
  • Detoxification: removes toxins and waste products from the blood
  • Metabolism: regulates carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism
  • Production of bile: aids in fat digestion and absorption
  • Storage of glycogen: regulates blood sugar levels
  • Production of proteins: such as clotting factors and albumin
• The liver receives blood from the GI tract and filters it before it reaches the rest of the body

Sistema Digestivo

• El sistema digestivo es un sistema complejo que descompone los alimentos en nutrientes para su absorción y utilización por el cuerpo
• Está compuesto por:
  • Boca (descomposición mecánica de los alimentos)
  • Esófago (tránsito de los alimentos)
  • Estómago (descomposición química de los alimentos)
  • Intestino delgado (absorción de nutrientes)
  • Intestino grueso (absorción de agua y eliminación de desechos)

Intestinos

• Intestino delgado:
  • También conocido como intestino pequeño
  • Mide aproximadamente 6 metros de longitud y 2.5 cm de diámetro
  • Se divide en tres partes: duodeno, yeyuno e íleon
  • Responsable de la mayoría de la absorción de nutrientes
• Intestino grueso:
  • También conocido como colon
  • Mide aproximadamente 1.5 metros de longitud y 7.5 cm de diámetro
  • Se divide en cuatro partes: colon ascendente, transverso, descendente y sigmoide
  • Responsable de la absorción de agua y eliminación de desechos

Tracto Gastrointestinal

• El tracto gastrointestinal (GI) es un tubo muscular que se extiende desde la boca hasta el ano
• Es responsable de la descomposición y absorción de nutrientes de los alimentos
• El tracto GI está revestido de mucosa, una capa de membrana mucosa que secreta enzimas digestivas y absorbe nutrientes
• El tracto GI se divide en:
  • Tracto GI superior: boca, esófago, estómago y duodeno
  • Tracto GI inferior: intestino delgado, intestino grueso y ano

Páncreas

• El páncreas es una glándula ubicada detrás del estómago
• Tiene dos funciones principales:
  • Función exocrina: secreta enzimas digestivas en el intestino delgado para descomponer carbohidratos, proteínas y grasas
  • Función endocrina: produce hormonas como insulina y glucagón para regular los niveles de azúcar en sangre
• El páncreas se divide en:
  • Páncreas exocrino: produce enzimas digestivas
  • Páncreas endocrino: produce hormonas

Función Hepática

• El hígado es el órgano más grande en la cavidad abdominal
• Tiene múltiples funciones, incluyendo:
  • Desintoxicación: elimina toxinas y productos de desecho de la sangre
  • Metabolismo: regula el metabolismo de carbohidratos, proteínas y grasas
  • Producción de bilis: ayuda en la digestión y absorción de grasas
  • Almacenamiento de glucógeno: regula los niveles de azúcar en sangre
  • Producción de proteínas: como factores de coagulación y albúmina
• El hígado recibe sangre del tracto GI y la filtra antes de que llegue al resto del cuerpo
