Study Notes
Work and Force
- Work is equal to Force multiplied by Displacement
- Force is a push or pull on an object, which can make objects move, stop, or change directions
- Work is done on an object when a force causes it to move in the same direction as the force
Types of Simple Machines
- Inclined Plane:
- Mechanical Advantage (MA) = slant length (slope) / height
- Has three components: Height (A), Length (B), and Slope (C)
- Wedge:
- MA = slope / width
- Screw:
- MA = circumference / pitch
- Circumference = 2π x radius or diameter
- Wheel and Axle:
- MA = Wheel Radius / Axle Radius
- Pulley:
- MA = Load / Effort
Friction and Displacement
- Friction: a force that resists change in motion and makes it harder to move things
- Displacement: a measure of how far out of place an object is, or the overall change in an object's position between two points
