Silviculture Definitions
- Silviculture: An art of producing a forest, using knowledge of silvics in the treatment, composition, and growth of the forest.
- Silvics: The science that examines the environmental factors influencing the characteristics of forest trees and stands.
- Forest: A dense tree cover on an area of land greater than 0.5 hectares, exhibiting distinct temperature, moisture, light, and humidity conditions.
- Stand: A homogeneous unit of trees, easily differentiated by age, composition, structure, site, and stand's location
- Mixed Stand: A stand where less than 80% of trees are a single species
- Pure Stand: A stand where at least 80% of the trees are of the same species
- Fully Stocked Stand: A stand where growing space is used effectively for the benefit of trees
- Residual Stand: A remaining stand after completion of cutting.
- Understocked Stand: A stand with insufficient trees to completely utilize available growing space.
- Even-aged Forest: Composed of stands with trees of similar age.
- Uneven-aged Forest: Composed of stands with trees of different ages.
Silvicultural Systems
- Silvicultural System: A planned program of silvicultural treatments throughout a stand's lifetime. Includes methods of reproduction, intermediate cuttings, harvesting, and protection/care.
- Reproduction Method: A procedure used to establish or renew a stand
- Clearcutting Method: A method involving the removal of the entire stand in one cutting
- Seed Tree Method: A method using the removal of mature timber, leaving only seed trees.
- Selection Method: A method involving the removal of mature trees at short intervals
- Simple coppice Method: A cutting method relying on vegetative reproduction.
