All non-zero digits in a number are considered significant figures. For example, 123.45 has 5 significant figures.

Zeros Between Significant Digits

Zeros between non-zero digits are significant. For example, 1002.03 has 6 significant figures.

Leading Zeros

  • Zeroes to the right of significant figures in decimal fractions are significant; otherwise, they may or may not be significant. The number of significant figures in a measurement depends on the measuring instrument's least count.

Rules for Calculations

  • Addition and subtraction: The least precise quantity during addition or subtraction dictates the result's precision. Round the final answer to the same number of decimal places as the quantity with the fewest decimal places.
