Flashcards
Non-zero Digits
Non-zero Digits
All non-zero digits in a number are considered significant figures. For example, 123.45 has 5 significant figures.
Zeros Between Significant Digits
Zeros Between Significant Digits
Zeros between non-zero digits are significant. For example, 1002.03 has 6 significant figures.
Leading Zeros
Leading Zeros
Zeros to the left of the first non-zero digit are not significant. For example, 0.0005 has 1 significant figure.

Study Notes
Significant Figures
- Significant figures are digits in a measurement that are known with certainty plus the first doubtful digit
- The uncertainty of a number is often not explicitly stated and instead indicated by the meaningful digits, or significant figures, of the measured value.
- Non-zero digits are always significant
- Zeroes between significant figures are significant
- Zeroes to the left of significant figures are not significant
- Zeroes to the right of significant figures in decimal fractions are significant; otherwise, they may or may not be significant. The number of significant figures in a measurement depends on the measuring instrument's least count.
Rules for Calculations
- Addition and subtraction: The least precise quantity during addition or subtraction dictates the result's precision. Round the final answer to the same number of decimal places as the quantity with the fewest decimal places.
- When using a calculator for significant figure calculations, keep track of the significant figure in each quantity to report the result with the correct precision.
