Freud's Theory of Psychic Determinism
- Based on the scientific assumption of determinism, Freud's theory holds that psychological phenomena and processes are determined by specific causes that can be studied through appropriate means.
Structure of the Mind
- Freud divided the human mind into three conceptual categories: unconscious, preconscious, and conscious.
- Conscious mind: consists of perceptions and conditions of which the individual is aware at any particular moment.
- Preconscious mind: consists of memories and ideas associated with conscious material, which can be made conscious with an effort.
- Unconscious mind: consists of repressed motives, emotions, and thoughts which the individual is not usually aware of.
- Unconscious material can be brought into awareness only through specific techniques of psychoanalysis, such as dream analysis and free association.
Sources of the Unconscious
- The unconscious mind springs from two major sources:
- Inherited traits present at birth
- Acquired through repression of desires, wishes, thoughts, etc.
