Study Notes

Networks and the Internet

The internet is a complex network of interconnected devices and systems that enable communication, information sharing, and access to a wide range of resources. Understanding the structure of the internet requires an understanding of various components and how they work together to provide the services we rely on daily.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs)

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are the companies that offer internet access to consumers and businesses. They have the infrastructure and technology needed to provide access to the internet, such as fiber-optic cables and satellites. ISPs are responsible for connecting end users to the internet, providing a range of services from basic internet access to advanced services like fiber-optic connections, satellite internet, and mobile internet.

Network Devices

Network devices are essential for the operation of any network, including the internet. These devices can include routers, switches, hubs, firewalls, access points, and more. They connect different parts of a network together, allow data to flow between them, and provide security measures to protect against unauthorized access.

IP Addressing

Internet Protocol (IP) addressing is used to identify and locate devices connected to a network. Each device connected to a network has its own unique IP address, which acts like a home address for your device. There are two versions of IP addresses in common use: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 uses numbers separated by dots to represent the address, while IPv6 uses hexadecimal numbers with colons instead.

Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System (DNS) is responsible for translating human-readable domain names into IP addresses that computers can understand. For example, when you type "google.com" into your web browser, DNS helps find the correct IP address for that website so you can visit it.

Web Servers

Web servers host websites and serve up their content to users requesting it over the internet. When you visit a website, you're essentially asking the web server to send you the files that make up the website, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and more.

Wide Area Networks (WANs)

Wide Area Networks (WANs) are used to connect multiple networks together over long distances. They allow for communication between end users across different parts of a network, such as between offices in different cities or countries.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are used to create secure connections between remote locations over the internet. By using encryption, VPNs protect against potential threats like data interception, identity theft, and other types of cybercrime.

Understanding these components provides insight into how the internet functions and how various systems work together to provide the services we use daily. While technology continues to evolve rapidly, the foundational principles behind these elements remain essential for maintaining reliable and secure internet access.
