Universal Declaration of Human Rights (April 6, 1949)

• This is the first document for all human rights.
• Every person of marriageable age has the right to marry and start a family regardless of race, citizenship, or religion.
• Marriage contracts can only be made with the free and full consent of both spouses.
• The family is the natural and fundamental element of society and has the right to protection by society and the State.

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)

• It defines discrimination against women as any distinction, exclusion, or restriction based on sex that denies or nullifies the recognition, enjoyment, or exercise by women.
• Women have the right to decide freely and responsibly on the number and timing of children
• They have to give women the necessary information, education, and means to exercise this right.
• States Parties must prohibit all forms of sale and exploitation of women in prostitution.
• The right to benefit from adequate health services, including information, counseling, and services in family planning should be available

Child Rights Convention (1989)

• States Parties recognize the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health, including access to medical care and rehabilitation facilities.

• The implementation of this right includes reducing infant and child mortality rates.

Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention, 2011)

• States have to ensure that intentional acts of mutilation, infibulation, or disabling women are illegal.
• Article 38 relates female circumcision, States should legislate or take measures against acts of mutilation or intentional disabling of labia.
