Study Notes
- This video tutorial teaches beginners how to make a pair of shorts with or without pockets in under an hour.
- To start, join the pattern sheets together by gluing them, without cutting the edges.
- If making shorts without pockets, place the pocket B piece on top of the front pattern and glue it in place.
- Sew the front and back panels together at the crotch with a 1 cm or 3/8 inch seam allowance, and finish with a serger or zigzag stitch.
- Add pockets to the front panel by placing the pocket A piece on top, aligning the edges, and sewing with a 1 cm or 3/8 inch seam allowance.
- Trim the seam in half, fold the pocket A piece to the back, and stitch on top of the curved edge to keep the raw edges inside.
- Add the pocket B piece to the pocket A piece, aligning them properly at the bottom curved edge, and sew with a 1 cm or 3/8 inch seam allowance.
- Finish the curved edge with a serger or zigzag stitch, and align the pockets to the front panels.
- Top stitch around 8 cm down the pocket to create a casing for the elastic, and repeat for the back panel.
- Place the front and back panels right sides together, and sew the sides with a 1 cm or 3/8 inch seam allowance, finishing with a serger or zigzag stitch.
- Sew the gusset in place with a 1 cm or 3/8 inch seam allowance, and create the elastic casing by folding the top of the shorts to the inside.
- Fold 4 cm of the top, and top stitch all around, leaving a 4-finger opening to insert the elastic.
- Measure and cut the elastic to fit around your waist, use a safety pin to guide it through the casing, and sew the opening closed.
- Top stitch the elastic to keep it from twisting, and hem the bottom of the shorts to finish.
