Seven April Revolution
Introduction
The seven April revolution was a significant event in Azerbaijani history. It began as a peaceful protest against the Soviet Union's decision to expel all non-Russian ethnic minorities from Baku, which had been home to various nationalities since ancient times. With the exception of the Russians, almost everyone else left the city within a few days. The majority of those who departed were Turks from Turkey and other Islamic countries. However, they also included people from Armenia, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Greece, and many other nations.
Historical Background
In 1988, the Soviet Union began its efforts to remove all non-Russians from its lands. This expulsion policy particularly affected Azerbaijan, where ethnic tensions between Azeris and Armenians were already high due to territorial disputes over Nagorno-Karabakh. As part of this policy, the Soviet government decided to expel all non-Russians from Baku.
On March 30, 1988, the Azeri authorities declared their intention to expel all residents of the city who did not have Soviet passports, regardless of whether they were citizens of the USSR or not. On April 2, 1988, Soviet troops entered Baku to enforce these measures by force. This marked the beginning of what became known as the March Events. Protests erupted across Azerbaijan, causing widespread violence and numerous deaths. By the end of the month, it is estimated that around 200 people had died in the unrest.
During the first month of the expulsion, more than two million people left Azerbaijan. The vast majority were ethnic Turks from Turkey, although there were also significant numbers of Armenians and other nationalities leaving. Many of those who departed were refugees fleeing persecution or fear of violence.
Aftermath
The seven April revolution marked the beginning of mass emigration from Azerbaijan. Initially, this began under the fearful influence of the events in Baku itself. However, when it became clear that the Soviet Union was determined to remove non-Russians from Azerbaijani lands, it led to an exodus of millions from the country.
In addition to the immediate impact on Azerbaijani society, the seven April revolution had long-term consequences for the entire region. It contributed to the escalation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which eventually led to a full-scale war in 1992. The war lasted until 1994, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of hundreds of thousands more.
Despite these challenges, the seven April revolution played a critical role in shaping modern Azerbaijani identity. For many Azeris, it served as a reminder of their historical connections to Turkey and other Muslim nations, reinforcing their sense of cultural affinity. Today, the memory of the seven April revolution continues to shape political debates within Azerbaijan and beyond.
