Study Notes

The Beatitudes

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
  • Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.
  • Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Salt and Light

  • The disciples are the salt of the earth, but if they lose their flavor, they are good for nothing.
  • The disciples are the light of the world, and they should let their light shine before men.

Fulfilling the Law

  • Jesus did not come to destroy the law or the prophets, but to fulfill.
  • Not one jot or tittle will pass from the law until all is fulfilled.
  • Whoever breaks one of the least commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.
  • Whoever does and teaches the commandments will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Righteousness

  • Righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees to enter the kingdom of heaven.
  • Anger without cause can lead to judgment, and insults can lead to hell fire.

Reconciliation

  • If someone remembers that their brother has something against them, they should leave their gift and go reconcile with their brother before offering their gift.
  • Agree with adversaries quickly to avoid judgment and prison.

Adultery and Divorce

  • Looking at someone with lust is equivalent to committing adultery in the heart.
  • If something causes sin, it is better to remove it to avoid hell.
  • Divorce is allowable only in cases of fornication.

Oaths and Vows

  • Do not swear oaths, as everything is God's, including heaven, earth, and Jerusalem.
  • Let communication be simple, without oaths, for anything more comes from evil.

Non-Resistance and Love

  • Do not resist evil, but instead, turn the other cheek, give more than asked, and go the extra mile.
  • Love enemies, bless those who curse, do good to those who hate, and pray for those who use and persecute.
