  • Sentences have five possible elements: Subject, Verbal, Complement, Object, and Adverbial.

Subject Examples

  • I am busy.
  • Jane is working hard.
  • The teacher was there.
  • What she said was true.
  • Between 6 and 8 p.m. is fine.
  • 'Now' is good.
  • Here is fine.
  • 'Hopeful' is a nice word.
  • That you helped him was a surprise.

Object Examples:

  • I wrote a letter to him.
  • I wrote him a letter.
  • He makes Sarah a great woman.
  • She made the poor happy.
  • I put the book on the shelf.
  • I do not know what you mean.

Complement Examples

  • Her brother was hungry.

  • It is what you want.

Verbal Structures

  • Verbs are grouped into three structures.

Linking Verbs

  • Some Linking Form of Verbs (be, look, turn, sound, seem, remain, become, feel ...etc)
  • Follow the structure: S+ V + (adv.) or (Cs) subject complement
  • The subject complement can be an adj.P, NP or a clause
  • Examples of "be" as a linking verb: I am fine, I am here, I am a student.
  • Other linking verbs: remain, look, sound, feel
  • For example: That child looks pale and she remained an outstanding student. The portrait looked what you described exactly.

Transitive Verbs

  • Some Transitive Verbs (play, write, elect, paint, make, put,...etc.)
  • There are five constructions:
    • S+V(mono transitive)+O: I play football.
    • S+V(dia transitive)+O+O: I played him football.
    • S+V(complex transitive)+O+Co (n): I made him a great student.
    • S+V(complex transitive)+O+Co (adj.): I made him happy.
    • S+V (locative transitive)+O+Adv: I put the book on the table.

Intransitive Verbs

  • Intransitive Verbs (play, go, travel, move, ...etc) are not followed by an object.
  • I play well now.
