Senses
- There are three types of senses: organic senses, special senses, and somatic senses.
Somatic Senses
- Somatic senses are further divided into four categories: pain, temperature, mechanoreceptive senses, and proprioception.
Mechanoreceptive Senses
- Mechanoreceptive senses are stimulated by mechanical stimuli.
- Examples of mechanoreceptive senses include touch, pressure, and vibration.
- There are two subtypes of touch: crude touch and fine touch.
Crude Touch
- Crude touch is poorly localized and has a low spatial resolution.
- It is mediated by free nerve endings and hair end organs.
- Afferent pathway is through A-delta fibers.
- Pathway is through the anterior (ventral) spinothalamic tract.
- Crude touch is also associated with sensations of tickling and itching.
Fine Touch
- Fine touch is well localized and has a high spatial resolution.
- It is mediated by receptors that are not specified in the text.

Proprioception
