Lesson Title: Sense Organs (The Eyes)
- The eyes are sense organs for seeing.
- Eyes work from when you wake up until you sleep.
- Eyes help us see our surroundings.
Essential Question: Why are the eyes important?
- The eyes enable us to see things around us.
- Eyes help us see the size, shape, and position of objects.
- Eyes allow us to name and describe objects.
What do you see?
- The slideshow provided different pictures for the students to look at and identify.
Sight
- Sight is one of the senses that helps us understand our surroundings.
Parts of the Eye
- Eyelid: Protects eyes from dirt, dust, and bright light; keeps eyes clean and moist.
- Eyebrows: Prevent sweat from entering the eyes.
- Eyeball: Ball-shaped portion of the eye; its internal parts enable clear vision.
- Eyelashes: Work with the eyelids to prevent foreign materials from entering the eyes.
- Sclera: The white part of the eye that protects the eyeball.
- Cornea: The clear layer at the front of the eye that transmits and focuses light.
- Iris: The colored part of the eye that controls and adjusts the amount of light entering.
- Pupil: The opening in the center of the iris through which light enters.
- Lens: Located behind the pupil, it focuses light rays onto the retina. It becomes thicker for close-up objects and thinner for far-away objects.
- Retina: Light rays are focused on the retina, converting light into electrical impulses.
- Optic Nerve: Carries electrical signals from the retina to the brain.
How the Eyes Work
- Light reflects off objects and enters the eyes through the pupil.
- The cornea and lens bend the light.
- The light rays cross after passing the lens.
- An upside-down image is formed on the retina.
- The optic nerve sends this message to the brain.
- The brain interprets the message and turns the image right-side up.
- The brain then tells us what objects we see.
Common Eye Problems
- Common Eye Irritation: occurs when particles like dust enter the eyes. Avoid rubbing the eyes. Clean hands and wash the affected eye. See a doctor if pain persists.
- Sty or Kuliti: A tiny painful red swelling on the eyelid, potentially caused by infection. Apply warm compresses and seek medical attention if it lasts several days.
- Conjunctivitis or Sore eyes: Swelling and reddening of the clear layer covering the eye, typically caused by infection. Protect yourself by avoiding contact with those affected. Avoid shared towels.
Common Eye Defects
- Nearsightedness (Myopia): Can see near objects clearly, but not far objects. Eyeglasses can help.
- Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Can see far objects clearly, but not close objects. Eyeglasses or adjustments to eye structure might be helpful.
- Squinting: Result of weak eye muscles. There are different types, like inside or outside squinting, or crossed eyes.
Taking Care of the Eyes
- Dietary Habits: Eat vegetables such as leafy green, yellow, or other veggies rich in vitamin A to keep your eyes and vision clear.
- Optimal Lighting: Read under sufficient and bright light, helping avoid eye strain.
- Rest Breaks: Rest your eyes after prolonged reading sessions. Close your eyes for a few minutes to reduce eye strain.
- Sharp Objects: Use caution when handling sharp or pointed objects.
- Avoid activities that may harm eyes: Avoid reading or straining eyes while lying down or in a moving vehicle.
