Steps for Suppository Insertion
- Begin by washing hands with soap and water
- Ensure the suppository is in good condition
- Check that the suppository is firm to the touch by squeezing it
- If the suppository is not firm, refrigerate for a few minutes or rinse under cold water until it hardens
- Lie on your side with the bottom leg extended and the upper leg pushed towards your chest or stomach
- Administer the suppository with the tapered side going in first
- Tapered end is the "punta del supp"
- Dip the tip in cool water to ease administration
- Push the suppository into the rectum
- Hold the buttocks together
- Stay lying down for a few minutes to allow the suppository to melt and start working
