    Study Notes

Scrum: An Agile Framework for Project Management

Scrum is a popular Agile framework used for managing and completing complex projects. It emphasizes iterative development, where a project is broken down into smaller, more manageable parts called sprints. Each sprint is a time-boxed period, typically lasting 2-4 weeks, during which the team works on a set of tasks and delivers a working software increment.

    Scrum Roles

    Scrum has three defined roles:

    1. Product Owner (PO): The Product Owner represents the stakeholders and is responsible for prioritizing the Product Backlog.

    2. Scrum Master (SM): The Scrum Master is responsible for ensuring the team follows the Scrum framework and removes obstacles that hinder the team's progress.

    3. Development Team (DT): The Development Team consists of professionals who do the work of delivering a potentially releasable Increment of "Done" product at the end of each Sprint.

    Scrum Artifacts

    Scrum has three artifacts:

    1. Product Backlog: This is a prioritized list of everything that is known to be needed in the product and can be thought of as a “to do” list for the Scrum Team.

    2. Sprint Backlog: The Sprint Backlog is the set of Product Backlog items selected for the Sprint plus a plan for delivering the product Increment and realizing the sprint goal.

    3. Increment: The Increment is the sum of all the completed Product Backlog items and potentially releasable increments from all previous Sprints.

    Scrum Events

    Scrum has four events:

    1. Sprint Planning: This event is time-boxed to a maximum of 8 hours for a two-week Sprint. The purpose of Sprint Planning is to decide how to accomplish the work of delivering the product Increment.

    2. Daily Scrum: This event is a 15-minute time-boxed event for the Development Team to synchronize activities and create a plan for the next 24 hours.

    3. Sprint Review: This event is time-boxed to a maximum of 4 hours for a two-week Sprint. The purpose of the Sprint Review is to inspect the Increment and adapt the Product Backlog if needed.

    4. Sprint Retrospective: This event is time-boxed to a maximum of 3 hours for a two-week Sprint. The purpose of the Sprint Retrospective is to inspect how the last Sprint went with regards to people, relationships, process, and tools, and identify what was done well and what needs to be improved.

    Scrum Values

    Scrum has five values:

    1. Commitment: The Development Team and the Product Owner should be committed to meeting the Sprint Goal and delivering a potentially releasable Increment.

    2. Courage: The Scrum Team members have the courage to do the right thing and work on tough problems.

    3. Focus: The Scrum Team focuses on the highest priority work and maintains a constant pace in every Sprint.

    4. Openness: The Scrum Team and its stakeholders agree to be open about truly reflecting how the work is progressing and what the challenges are.

    5. Respect: Scrum Team members respect each other to be capable, independent people.

In conclusion, Scrum is an Agile framework that uses roles, artifacts, and events to manage and complete complex projects. By following the Scrum framework, teams can deliver high-quality products in a timely manner while continuously improving their processes and relationships.
