Study Notes
Scientific Lab Equipment
-
Beaker: Used for pouring, storing, mixing, heating, and dispensing. Not used for accurate measurement. It has a beak to aid pouring.
-
Flask: Used to hold solids or liquids, that may release gases during a reaction or might splatter when stirred or heated.
-
Florence Flask: Used to hold liquids, not accurate measurements.
-
Volumetric Flask: A laboratory flask calibrated to hold a precise volume at a specified temperature. Used for precise dilutions and preparing standard solutions. Typically pear-shaped with a flat bottom, and made of glass or plastic.
-
Graduated Cylinder: Used to measure liquids, not for reactions. Read measurement from the curve of the meniscus.
-
Test Tubes: Used to hold liquids and chemicals during experiments. Used for storing, mixing, and heating. Not for measuring. Should be held with tongs or clamps, never by hand.
-
Burette: Vertical cylindrical laboratory glassware. Used to dispense known amounts of liquid in experiments.
-
Meniscus: The curved surface of a liquid in a container, caused by adhesion between the liquid and the container, and cohesion between liquid particles.
-
Test Tube Holder: Used to hold test tubes that are too hot to handle.
-
Test Tube Brushes: Used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders.
-
Test Tube Racks: Used for holding and organizing test tubes. Plastic racks may melt with extreme heat.
-
Rubber Stoppers: Used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination. Avoid heating containers while stoppers are in place.
-
Spot Plates: Used for many small-scale reactions at one time.
-
Watch Glass: Used to hold small amounts of solid, like reaction products.
-
Glass Stir Rod: Used to manually stir solutions, and transfer one single drop of a solution.
-
Stirring Rod: Used to mix chemicals or hot liquids together.
-
Medicine Dropper (Eyedropper): Used to transfer small volumes of liquid (less than one mL).
-
Litmus Paper: Used to identify bases (red litmus paper turns blue) and acids (blue litmus paper turns red).
-
Funnel: Used to transfer liquids from one container to another.
-
Mohr Pipet: Measures and delivers exact volumes of liquids.
-
Micropipette: A laboratory instrument used to accurately and precisely transfer microliter volumes of liquids. Single-channel versus Multi-channel.
-
Wash Bottle: Delivers wash solution to a specific area; distilled water only.
-
Weighing Boat: Used to weigh solids that will be transferred to another vessel.
-
Spatulas: Used to dispense solid chemicals from containers; chemicals should not be transferred with bare hands.
-
Beaker Tongs: Used to move beakers containing hot liquids.
-
Bunsen Burner/Hot Plate: Heat source. Bunsen burners heat non-volatile liquids and solids, hot plates use electricity.
-
Ring Stand with Clamp and Ring: Holds containers away from heat during experiments.
-
Iron Ring: Provide a stable, elevated platform for reactions.
-
Utility Clamps: Used to secure test tubes, distillation columns, and burets to the ring stand.
-
Double Buret Clamps: Used to hold burets (long graduated tubes used in titration).
-
Laboratory Centrifuge: Equipment that spins liquid samples at high speed for separating substances of different densities.
