Science Class 8: Understanding Chemical Reactions
In science class 8, one of the core concepts is understanding how chemicals interact with each other during certain processes called chemical reactions. These reactions involve the making of new products from old ones, using energy. Here's what you need to know about these reactions:
Types of Chemical Reactions
Chemical reactions can either be combination, decomposition, exchange, or displacement reactions:
- In combination reactions, two or more simple substances combine together to give rise to a different substance which has properties quite unlike those of any of the original substances. An example of this type of reaction is burning wood.
- Decomposition involves breaking up a complex compound into simpler compounds. For instance, when calcium carbonate decomposes, it breaks down to form calcium oxide and carbon dioxide gas.
- Exchange reactions replace atoms within a molecule without affecting its overall composition. This occurs through the swapping of electrons between elements such as potassium and sodium, forming kalium hydroxid and natriumhydroxide respectively.
- Displacement reactions occur when one element replaces another in a compound, causing a change in reactants and products. When copper reacts with sulfur, it forms silver sulfide, displaceing some of the silver.
Balancing Equations
When studying chemical reactions in class 8, students also learn how to balance equations to show the relative amounts of reactants and products involved in the reaction. To create balanced chemical equations, perform the following steps: 1. List all the symbols, physical states, and charges for each atom present in both the reactant(s) and product(s) side. 2.
