Study Notes
Chemistry: Methods and Measurement
- Chemistry is the study of matter and its chemical and physical properties
- Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space
- Air is matter
- Matter undergoes changes, gaining or losing energy
- Energy is the ability to do work to cause change
Three States of Matter
- Gas: Particles are widely separated, no definite shape or volume
- Liquid: Particles are closer together, definite volume but no definite shape
- Solid: Particles are very close together, definite shape and definite volume
- Water exists in all three states
Physical Properties and Changes
- Physical property: observed without changing the composition or identity of a substance
- Physical change: produces a recognizable difference in appearance without changing composition or identity (e.g., melting ice)
- Chemical property: results in a change in composition, observed through a chemical reaction.
- Chemical reaction (Chemical change): a chemical substance is converted into one or more different substances through rearranging, removing, replacing, or adding atoms (e.g., hydrogen + oxygen → water)
Categorization of Matter
-
Pure substances: contain only one component
-
Mixture: combination of two or more pure substances, each retains its own identity
-
Element: a pure substance that cannot be broken down by any chemical reaction
-
Compound: a pure substance resulting from the combination of two or more elements in a definite, reproducible ratio
-
Homogeneous mixture: uniform composition; thoroughly intermingled (e.g., salt in water)
-
Heterogeneous mixture: non-uniform composition; random placement (e.g., oil and water)
Units of Measurement
- Units are essential for measurements of mass, volume, etc.
- English System: functionally unrelated units which are difficult to convert
- Metric System: Composed of related units based on powers of ten
- Metric units: Seconds for time, grams for mass, meters for length, liters for volume
Metric System Prefixes
- Prefixes are used to denote multiples or sub-multiples of the base units
- Prefixes are based on powers of ten
Significant Figures
- Significant figures represent known digits plus one uncertain digit
- All non-zero digits are significant
- Zeros between non-zero digits are significant
- Trailing zeros after a decimal point are significant
- Zeros before any non-zero digits are not significant
Scientific Notation
- Used to express very large or very small numbers
- Represented as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by 10 raised to a power
- Used in calculators for ease and precision
Rounding Numbers
- Rule for rounding: When significant digit to be dropped is less than 5, keep the preceding digit unchanged. When it is 5 or greater, increase the preceding digit by one
- The final result should have the same or fewer significant digits as the number in the least precise measurement
Unit Conversion
- Dimensional analysis method is used for unit conversion
- Conversion factors relate different units
Temperature
- Temperature measures the degree of hotness of an object
- Conversion factors exist between units for Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin
Density and Specific Gravity
- Density is the ratio of mass to volume
- Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of the object to the density of pure water
