Study Notes
Module B-2 - Physics, Topic 2.1: Matter
- Matter is a general term for any substance that occupies space and has mass.
- The volume of a substance is the amount of space it occupies.
- Mass cannot be created or destroyed.
- Density is the mass per unit volume (m/V).
- Solids and liquids are incompressible and have a fixed density.
- Gases are compressible.
- Atoms are the smallest constituent of elements.
- Almost all the mass of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus, composed of protons and neutrons.
- Protons have a positive charge, electrons have a negative charge, and neutrons have no charge.
- Elements are matter where all atoms/molecules are identical.
- Electrons surround the nucleus in successive energy levels called shells.
- The number of protons in an atom determines the element.
- The number of protons equals the number of electrons in a neutral atom.
- The periodic table orders elements by atomic number.
Atomic Structure
- Four fundamental interactions: Gravity, Weak Nuclear, Electromagnetic, and Strong Nuclear.
- Gravity is insignificant on the atomic scale.
- The Weak Nuclear Interaction contributes to radioactivity.
- Electromagnetic Interaction is the source of electrical and magnetic energy.
- The Strong Nuclear Interaction holds the nuclei together.
Atomic Number and Mass
- The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom.
- Atomic mass is the average mass of all the isotopes of an element.
- The atomic mass is approximately equal to the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Ions
- Ions are atoms that have gained or lost electrons.
- An atom that has lost electrons becomes a positively charged ion.
- An atom that has gained electrons becomes a negatively charged ion.
Isotopes
- Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
- The atomic number remains the same, but the atomic mass changes.
- Not all isotopes are radioactive.
Molecules and Compounds
- Atoms combine to form molecules.
- Matter comprised of different elements is called a compound.
- Compounds have specific proportions of elements.
- Molecules are identical in a compound but are made of different atoms.
- Molecular properties differ from individual element properties.
States of Matter
- Matter exists in three states: solid, liquid, and gas.
- Solids have a definite shape and volume.
- Liquids have a definite volume but take the shape of their container.
- Gases have neither a definite shape nor a definite volume.
- States can be changed by altering molecular activity. (melting, freezing, vaporization, etc.)
Mixtures
- A mixture is a combination of two or more substances where each substance retains its original properties.
- Mixtures can have varying ratios of elements that do not combine chemically.
- Mixtures have physical combinations.
- Mixtures can be separated into original components.
- Examples: Salty water, Air, metal alloys.
Molecules and Matter
-
Molecules are not stationary—they vibrate continuously.
-
Temperature is a measure of molecular activity.
-
Molecules in solids are closely packed, liquids less closely packed, and gases are dispersed.
-
Gas flows more easily than liquids/solids because molecules experience less attraction and have more energy.
Density
- Density is mass per unit volume.
- Density determines how closely the molecules are packed.
- Solids are usually denser than liquids; gases are least dense. There are exceptions to this general rule.
