School Based Threats Procedure
- Upon receipt of a potential School Based Threat, the deputy must immediately notify their supervisor.
- The threat must be investigated until it's completely eliminated or dispelled and there are no other leads.
Investigation and Gathering Information
- A thorough interview with the complainant and any available witnesses shall be conducted as soon as possible.
- School Resource Section supervisors made aware of a School Based Threat shall obtain as much information as possible to determine the best course of action.
Involving School Security
- If the suspect is a student within the Hillsborough County School system, a Sheriff's Office supervisor shall notify School Security (813-623-3996).
- School Security will assist the investigating deputy with providing pertinent information relating to student contact information.
- School Security may conduct home visits of involved students based on their policies.
Questioning the Suspect and Searching the Residence
- The suspect (or parent/guardian if a juvenile) should be questioned about weapon availability, ammunition, and storage in accordance with Florida State Statute.
- Consent to search the residence should be requested to confirm the above; if consent is given, a search should be conducted.
- If consent is denied, the parent/guardian should be requested to check the student's bedroom and personal belongings for concealed weapons.
Special Cases and Reporting
- If the threat involves a school within another jurisdiction, the investigating deputy's supervisor shall coordinate with the Sheriff's Office Communications Bureau to notify the other jurisdiction.
- If the threat involves a charter school within the unincorporated area of Hillsborough County, the responding deputy shall immediately notify their supervisor.
- An incident report shall be generated for each School Based Threat received, with multiple reports of the same threat completed in a single master incident report.
