    Scapula - Anterior View Overview

    • The scapula, or shoulder blade, is shown from the front (anterior) view in this diagram.

    Key Structures and Features

    • The Coracoid process is a bony projection of the scapula that attaches to muscles: Pectoralis minor, Biceps brachii (short head), Coracobrachialis, and the Coracoclavicular, Coracoacromial, and Coracohumeral ligaments.
    • The Suprascapular notch is a groove on the superior border of the scapula, that allows passage of the Suprascapular nerve and vessels.
    • The Supraglenoid tubercle is a small bump above the glenoid cavity where the Biceps brachii (long head) attaches.
    • The Infraglenoid tubercle is a small bump below the glenoid cavity where the Triceps brachii (long head) attaches.
    • The Subscapular fossa is a large, concave area on the anterior surface of the scapula, which serves as the origin of the Subscapularis muscle.
    • The Glenoid cavity is a shallow socket on the lateral side of the scapula that articulates with the head of the humerus to form the shoulder joint.
    • The Medial border of the scapula is the inner edge and the Serratus Anterior muscle attaches to it.
    • The Inferior angle of the scapula is the bottom point and the Serratus Anterior muscle also attaches to it.
