- A coordinate system is used to identify unique points in a plane and is an artificial mathematical tool to describe the position of real objects.
- A coordinate system consists of a fixed reference point (origin), specific axes with scales and labels, and instructions on how to label a point relative to the origin and axes.
- A coordinate system can be 1D, 2D, or 3D. In one dimension, only one real number is needed to describe the position of an object. In two dimensions, two numbers are needed to define the x and y axes. In three dimensions, three numbers are needed to describe the position of an object.
- Cartesian coordinate systems (also called rectangular coordinate systems) use the x- and y-axes, and points are labeled as (x,y). In plane polar coordinate systems, points are labeled as (r, θ), where r is the distance from the origin and θ is the angle from a reference line.
- In a polar coordinate system, the value of r corresponds to the x and y-axis values, and can be determined using the sine, cosine, and tangent functions or the Pythagorean theorem. The Law of Cosines is useful for finding the length of a side of a triangle or the angles of a triangle given all three sides.
