Overview

The SAT is a standardized college admissions test in the United States.

Purpose

The SAT is designed to assess a student's readiness for college and provide colleges with a common data point to compare applicants from different high schools.

Format

The SAT is a three-hour test consisting of four sections:

Reading (65 minutes, 52 questions): Tests reading comprehension skills through the analysis of literary and informational texts.
Writing and Language (35 minutes, 44 questions): Tests writing skills through the analysis of written passages and identification of errors.
Math (with a calculator) (80 minutes, 30 questions): Tests math skills in areas such as algebra, data analysis, and geometry.
Math (without a calculator) (25 minutes, 20 questions): Tests math fluency and understanding of mathematical concepts.

Scoring

The SAT is scored on a scale of 200-1600, with separate scores for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Math.

ERW score: Ranges from 200-800, with an optional Essay scored separately.
Math score: Ranges from 200-800.

Question Types

The SAT includes a variety of question types, including:

Multiple-choice questions: Students choose the correct answer from a set of options.
Grid-in questions: Students enter their own numerical answers.
Essay question (optional): Students write a persuasive essay in response to a prompt.

Test-Taking Strategies

Effective strategies for taking the SAT include:

Time management: Allocate time wisely to complete each section.
Process of elimination: Eliminate clearly incorrect answer choices to increase the chances of selecting the correct answer.
Answer choice analysis: Analyze answer choices to identify the correct answer.
