    Study Notes

    SAP HANA: History and Overview

    • SAP launched SAP HANA in 2011, a powerful in-memory platform utilizing modern hardware. It stores data compressed & row-oriented in memory, enabling real-time reporting.
    • In 2012, SAP BW powered by SAP HANA allowed real-time analytical processes and reporting.
    • SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA (SoH) combined OLTP and OLAP in a single in-memory system enabling real-time operational reporting.
    • SAP Simple Finance (later SAP S/4HANA Finance) transformed finance applications for the digital age, running on the real-time SAP HANA platform.
    • SAP S/4HANA (2015) unified and simplified enterprise resource planning functions, leveraging SAP HANA as its foundation for a modern architecture. "S" stands for Suite/Simplified and "4" stands for fourth Generation.
    • SAP BW/4HANA (2016) is a new-generation data warehouse, using SAP HANA and supporting all kinds of data (structured/unstructured) connected to SAP applications and other systems.
    • SAP C/4HANA (2018) modernises legacy CRM solutions, integrating cloud-based offerings for sales, marketing, commerce, and customer service (Formerly SAP Hybris). This suite of cloud applications have been consolidated under the SAP Customer Experience (CX) Business Unit.
    • SAP HANA Cloud (2020) brings HANA in-memory capabilities to the cloud as a service within SAP BTP.

    SAP S/4HANA: Key Features

    • SAP S/4HANA is a next-generation business suite built on SAP HANA, offering simplified data models, user experiences, business processes and decision-making.
    • It's designed for the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, business networks, and mobile-first usage.
    • Integrating with IoT, Big Data, mobile, business networks and third-party systems is supported.
    • S/4HANA aims at simplifying the IT landscape and reducing the total cost of ownership by using SAP HANA.
    • Consolidation of data from different systems like SAP ERP, CRM, SRM, SCM and PLM leads to reducing hardware, operation costs and time by utilizing a single data source.
    • Modern design principles and SAP Fiori UX reduce training requirements and increases productivity.
    • Flexible deployments—cloud, on-premise, or hybrid, allow for easier adoption—are available.
    • Simplifies data structure by eliminating indices, aggregates, and redundancies.
    • Reduction in the number of tables typically used to perform a single booking from 15 to 4; this results in faster performance.

    Migrating to SAP HANA

    • Migration to SAP HANA involves switching to a new SAP HANA database, and doesn't affect most other aspects within the software landscape.

    • Existing systems running on SAP HANA can remain integrated with other systems.

    • Application servers can be reused since they run separately from the database.

    • Two methods for migration are:

      • Heterogeneous system copy using Software Provisioning Manager (SWPM)
      • Database migration option (DMO) within Software Update Manager (SUM).
      • DMO (database migration option) simplifies the process, combining system update and database migration into a single step using SUM (Software Update Manager), the trusted tool for system maintenance.
    • Using DMO reduces downtime, complexity, and costs and uses a trusted tool (SUM).

    • In-place migration keeps the application server and system ID constant and requires only one maintenance phase, reducing downtime and risk.

    • The original database can be kept as a fallback. This reduces risk and gives time for testing.
