Study Notes
Salmonella Typhi
- Restricted to humans, not found in animals or animal products
- Causes enteric fever, characterized by fever, headaches, muscle aches, and pain
- Cough may occur, but diarrhea is not a common symptom
- Typical rose spots may be present on the abdomen
Symptoms and Complications
- If untreated, lasts for 3-4 weeks
- 3% of cases become chronic carriers, excreting bacteria for up to 50 years, usually from the gallbladder
Characteristics
- Gram-negative rod with long flagella, making it a good swimmer
- Has fimbriae, short appendages for attachment and innate infection
Clinical Presentation
- Enteric fever with flu-like symptoms
- High mortality rate if symptoms persist for over 2 weeks
- Characterized by rose spots on the abdomen
- Low infection dose, can be contracted by coming into contact with contaminated food or objects
Comparison with NTS (Non-Typhoidal Salmonella)
- NTS causes abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea, but with low mortality rate
