Study Notes
Sharing the Road with CMVs
- Orange areas are "No Zones" where other vehicles should not be present
- Leave space when stopped behind a CMV on an upgrade in case it drifts back when starting to move
- Keep to the left in your lane so the CMV driver can see you
- Avoid using high beam headlights when following a CMV at night to avoid blinding the driver
- When a CMV is approaching from the opposite direction, keep to the right to avoid a sideswipe crash
- Be cautious when a CMV is making a right turn, as it may need to swing wide to the left
- Never cross behind a CMV that is preparing to back up or is in the process of doing so, as the size of the vehicle can hide objects from view
Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs)
- LSVs are four-wheeled vehicles with top speeds of 21-25 MPH
- Examples of LSVs include golf carts that have been converted to LSVs
- To operate an LSV, you must have a valid driver's license
- LSVs must be operated on streets with a posted speed limit of 35 MPH or less
- LSVs must be equipped with certain safety features, such as headlamps, stop lamps, and turn signals
- LSVs must be registered and properly insured
Passing Commercial Vehicles
- When passing a CMV, check your front and rear, and only move into the passing lane if it is clear and safe to pass
- Signal when changing lanes and let the CMV driver know you are passing by blinking your headlights, especially at night
- Pass CMVs on the left side for maximum visibility
- Complete your pass as quickly as possible to avoid remaining in the CMV's blind spot
- Avoid cutting in too soon when passing a CMV, as large CMVs can't stop as quickly as other vehicles
- Avoid passing a CMV on a downgrade, as the CMV's weight and momentum will cause it to increase speed
Golf Carts
- Golf carts can only be driven on golf courses or roadways designated for golf carts
- Golf carts must not be driven by anyone under the age of 14 on public roads or streets
- Golf carts must only be operated during the hours between sunrise and sunset, unless local government allows them to be driven outside of those hours
- Golf carts may not be operated at all unless allowed by the specific county or city
- Golf carts may cross state roads if the posted speed limit is 45 MPH or less and only at an intersection with a traffic control device
- Required equipment for golf carts includes efficient brakes, rear-view mirror, reliable steering, red warning reflectors, and safe tires
- Additional equipment required for night driving includes headlights, brake lights, and turn signals
- You can drive a golf cart on a sidewalk only if it is at least 5 feet wide, and you must yield to pedestrians
- You can drive a golf cart on a two-lane county road in a city that designates it may be used for golf carts
- All local and state traffic laws must be obeyed, including yielding the right-of-way
