Volleyball Lesson

• Learning Targets: Students will learn about volleyball's history, skills, and sportsmanship. They will also practice tolerance and camaraderie.

• Familiar Players: Alyssa Valdez, Kim Fajardo, Gen Casugod, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Mika Reyes, Denden Lazaro, Rhea Dimaculangan, Maika Ortiz, Aby Marano, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Jaja Santiago, and Ces Molina are members of the Philippine Volleyball National Team and compete internationally.

• Popularity in the Philippines: Volleyball is a popular sport during school intramurals for both boys and girls. Live broadcasts are popular.

• History of Volleyball: William G. Morgan invented volleyball in 1895. Initially called "mignonette," it combined elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball, involving offensive passing and blocking strategies. The first YMCA national championship was held in Brooklyn, NY in 1992, with eleven US states participating.

Volleyball Court Dimensions and Rules

• Court Dimensions: A volleyball court is divided into two 9x9 meter courts by a center line. A net extends across the center line.

• Safety Features: Metal cables and posts support the net, covered to prevent injury.

• Attack Line: A line 3 meters from the center divides the court into front and back rows.

• End/Base Line: The boundary of the playing area, where the serving action takes place.

• Gameplay: The game involves rallies, scoring points when the ball lands on the opponent’s court. Each team has a maximum of 3 hits per rally.

• Service: The game begins with a serve, which must be performed from behind the end line. The ball is hit, and it’s legal for it to touch the net before hitting the opponents side.

• Rotation: Teams rotate clockwise after scoring a point. The team who loses the game will serve the ball first.

• Violations: Examples of violations include stepping over/on lines during a serve, body contact with the net, reaching under the net, and hitting the ball twice.

Volleyball Skills

• Serving: Different serving methods include underhand, topspin, and overhand, with specific rules on the player's positioning and the ball’s trajectory (must be visible to the opponent and the ball's service must not violate the lines.

• Passing: Includes forearm and overhead passes (setting). Forearm is most often used to receive services or attacks with low trajectories, while overhead is used to prepare a spike by another player and the ball must be above the net.

• Spiking: A forceful strike directed at the opposing team's court. Players must wait for the setter and correctly position themselves to spike the ball after the set.

• Blocking: Players jump high with outstretched arms and palms facing the net to deflect the ball. Players must avoid touching the net.
