Effective Communication in the Workplace
- A person who talks excessively, without considering others, can be alienating and boring, and may be insecure and seeking attention.
The Five Default Modes of Communication
- Monologue: talking as if the listener is a captive audience, without considering their input or response.
- Diatribe: an angry monologue, where the speaker is venting and sees their view as the only one that matters.
- Argument: a competitive conversation where both parties try to one-up each other, without considering the other's perspective.
- Discussion: a calm and clear communication where all sides are given equal weight, aiming for mutual understanding.
- Dialogue: a person-to-person communication that starts with empathy, disregards status, and focuses on understanding rather than dominating.
Identifying Your Communication Style
- Pay attention to the body language of your listeners to determine if you're talking over, at, or with them.
- Recognize the signs of removed listening, defensiveness, and reactiveness in your listeners.
Improving Your Communication Style
- Check your style by observing how people respond to you.
- Aim to turn off the monologue, diatribe, and argument modes and turn on the discussion and dialogue modes.
