- Benvolio, Mercutio, and Tybalt are in a public place in Verona when Tybalt asks them about Romeo
- When Romeo appears Tybalt confronts him, calling him a "villain," or a low, ill-mannered person, because Romeo is a Montague and Juliet's cousin
- Romeo tries to avoid fighting because he is now married to Juliet, however Tybalt is not calmed and demands Romeo fight
- Mercutio challenges Tybalt to a fight, and Romeo tries to stop him, but Tybalt stabs Mercutio
- Mercutio is wounded and curses the houses of Montague and Capulet as he dies
- Romeo feels responsible for the death of Mercutio and feels he should’ve acted more manly and fought Tybalt
- Romeo then challenges Tybalt to a fight, and they fight, resulting in Tybalt's death
