Roman Numerals
- Roman numerals use letters to represent numbers
- Numbers from 1 to 1000 can be written in Roman numerals
- Roman numerals are used in various contexts, such as on introductory pages of books and on clock faces
- The competencies developed will enable you to use Roman numerals in different contexts.
Roman Numerals from I to X
- Roman numerals from 1 to 10 are represented by I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X.
- Numerals 1-3 are represented by repeating 'I' e.g. II=two, III=three
- The numeral 4 is represented by IV (5 -1)
- The numeral 5 is represented by V
- The numeral 6 is represented by VI (5 + 1)
- The numeral 9 is represented by IX (10-1)
- The numeral 10 is represented by X
- Values are added when a smaller value is to the right of a larger value in Roman numerals. This means you add the values together. Example: VI=6
- Values are subtracted when a smaller value is to the left of a larger value in Roman numerals This means you subtract the smaller value from the larger one. e.g. IV=4
Writing Roman Numerals
- To write Roman numerals, you follow specific rules, based on the position of letters
- The letter I can be repeated up to 3 times.
- The letters I, X and C can be subtracted from the letters after them in a sequence if appearing before.
- Understanding these rules allows for writing and reading Roman Numerals from 1-1000 correctly.
Roman Numerals from XI to XX
- Roman numerals XI to XX represent numbers 11 to 20
- XI = 11, XII = 12, XIII = 13, XIV = 14, XV=15, XVI=16, XVII=17, XVIII = 18, XIX = 19, XX = 20
Roman Numbers from XXI to XXX
- XXI=21, XXII=22, XXIII=23 and so on to XXX=30
- Each Roman numeral sequence increments by 1 until XXX=30
Roman Numerals from XXXIV to L
- XXXIV=34, XXXV=35, XXXVI=36, XXXVII =37, XXXVIII=38, XXXIX=39, XL=40, XLI = 41, to L = 50
- Values increase as you move along the sequence, incrementing by 1
Roman Numerals from L to C
- L=50, LX=60, LXX=70, LXXX=80, XC=90, C=100
- Roman numerals are used for numbers from 50 - 100, each numeral increments by 10 as you move along the sequence.
