    Roman Numerals

    • Roman numerals use letters to represent numbers
    • Numbers from 1 to 1000 can be written in Roman numerals
    • Roman numerals are used in various contexts, such as on introductory pages of books and on clock faces

    Roman Numerals from I to X

    • Roman numerals from 1 to 10 are represented by I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X.
    • Numerals 1-3 are represented by repeating 'I' e.g. II=two, III=three
    • The numeral 4 is represented by IV (5 -1)
    • The numeral 5 is represented by V
    • The numeral 6 is represented by VI (5 + 1)
    • The numeral 9 is represented by IX (10-1)
    • The numeral 10 is represented by X
    • Values are added when a smaller value is to the right of a larger value in Roman numerals. This means you add the values together. Example: VI=6
    • Values are subtracted when a smaller value is to the left of a larger value in Roman numerals This means you subtract the smaller value from the larger one. e.g. IV=4

    Writing Roman Numerals

    • To write Roman numerals, you follow specific rules, based on the position of letters
    • The letter I can be repeated up to 3 times.
    • The letters I, X and C can be subtracted from the letters after them in a sequence if appearing before.
    • Understanding these rules allows for writing and reading Roman Numerals from 1-1000 correctly.
