Role Models
- Role models are people whose behavior, success, or qualities are emulated by others.
- Role models can be people we know well or people who are distant.
- A role model's personal qualities and character traits can influence a person’s thoughts, values, and behaviors.
- A role model can be different than what people expect - for example, a boy may have his female teacher as his role model, or a girl could have her father or big brother as a role model.
Peer Pressure
- Peer pressure is the influence that friends or people of similar age have on you.
- Peer pressure can encourage you to change your attitudes, values, or behavior.
- Peer pressure can lead to young people experimenting with risky activities and behaviors they might not otherwise consider, such as using drugs, fighting, carrying a weapon, engaging in sexual activities, causing or swearing, and destroying other people's property.
- Online peer pressure is when people influence others through social media websites on the internet.
Listening
- Active listening requires you to attentively listen to a speaker, understand what they are saying, respond and reflect on what is being said, and retain the information for later.
- Passive listening is listening without reacting: allowing someone to speak without interrupting, not doing anything else at the same time, but not really paying attention to what is being said.
Coping with Emotions
- Different situations cause us to have different feelings.
- Sometimes we have positive feelings, and at other times we have negative feelings.
- These feelings can affect our relationships with others.
- It’s important to understand these feelings and learn how to manage them.
- Develop skills that will help you to cope with difficult feelings and situations.
- Empathizing is when you imagine what life is like for another person and feel how they must be feeling.
