Robotics Applications
- Robots are used in a variety of fields including industry, military, education, medicine, space, and even at home.
- Common industrial robotic applications include welding, painting, and material handling.
- Manufacturing sectors that use robots include automobile, aerospace, chemical, plastics, electrical and electronics, food and beverage.
- In the service industry, robots can help doctors and nurses in hospitals, assist physically handicapped individuals, transfer documents and medicine in hospitals, and provide surveillance in airports.
- Examples of service robots include the Da Vinci Surgical Robot, Tommy the robot nurse, and the Airport Security Robot.
- Robots play a role in military and police work, as well as space exploration.
Defining Robots
- A basic definition is that a robot is an automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multi-purpose manipulator with multiple degrees of freedom.
- Robots use sensing, planning, actuating, and control for functionality.
- Humanoids are much more complex and require capabilities such as self-maintenance, sensitivity to their surroundings, adaptability to new situations, avoiding harm to humans, property and themselves, and safe interaction with humans and the environment.
Industrial Robotics
- The term "robot" was coined by Czech author Karel Capek in the play RUR (Rossum's Universal Robots).
- The word "robot" comes from the Czech word "robota," meaning servitude or forced labor.
- Joseph Engelberger was a pioneer in industrial robotics. He worked with George Devol to create the first industrial robot in the 1950s, called "Unimate", which was installed in a General Motors factory.

Collaborative Robots (Cobots)
- Cobots are designed to work alongside humans in a collaborative workspace.
- They are suitable for repetitive or menial tasks, allowing human workers to focus on complex and demanding work.
- Cobots offer inherent safety features, including force feedback and collision detection, making them safe to work with humans.
- Cobots can be easily programmed by workers with minimal robot programming knowledge.
- Collaborative robots are used in various sectors, including automotive, electronics, general manufacturing, metal fabrication, packaging, plastics, food, furniture, pharmaceuticals, and scientific research.
Universal Robots (UR)

Universal Robots Control Box (UR10)
