- Private vehicles must be tested annually four years after registration.
- The test covers mechanical and functional aspects of the vehicle, all relating to roadworthiness and safety.
- A valid test certificate is required to use a vehicle on public roads.
- It's an offense to use, cause to be used, or permit to be used a vehicle without a valid test certificate.
- The offense can be dealt with as a non-endorsable ticket for £60 at the roadside, alternatively, it can be part of a prosecution file.
- A test certificate is normally valid for 12 months.
