Demanding Information
- The Road Traffic (NI) Order 1981 gives police officers the power to demand information from drivers, owners, and other individuals.
- Drivers must provide their name, address, and, if not the owner, the owner's name and address.
- Drivers must also provide information concerning the vehicle, including names and addresses of passengers at the time of the alleged offense.
- Owners must provide the driver's identity unless they can prove they don't know and couldn't have ascertained who the driver was.
- Any individual must provide information that could lead to the identification of the driver or owner.
- Failing to provide this required information is an offense.
Identification of Cyclists
- A constable can demand a cyclist's name and address for offenses such as dangerous, careless, or inconsiderate cycling or cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Failure to provide this information constitutes an offense.
- There's no power for preliminary tests to be conducted on cyclists in this instance.
