Road Terms & Definitions
- ROAD SIGNS: Devices mounted on a fixed support (permanent signs) or portable support (temporary signs) conveying a specific message using words or symbols for regulating, warning, or guiding traffic. Disregarding signs constitutes an offense.
- STOP SIGNS: Signs that inform road users of traffic laws and regulations.
- SPECIAL INSTRUCTION SIGNS: Signs instructing road users to meet specific traffic rule requirements, such as use, trucks, check brakes, reduce speed, and more.
- WARNING SIGNS: Warn road users of conditions on or adjacent to the road that may be unexpected or hazardous.
- GUIDE SIGNS/INFORMATIVE SIGNS: Inform and advise road users of directions, distances, routes, or location of services, points of interest.
- ROADWORK SIGNS: Warn or advise of temporary hazardous conditions, that could endanger road users or the men and equipment engaged on roadwork.
- OVERHEAD SIGNS: Provide means of displaying essential traffic information on wide multi-lane roads, where some degree of lane control is required, or where side-of-road clearance is insufficient to accommodate a road sign.
- BARRIERS: Impediments designed to protect vehicles, minimize damage to workers, and reduce pedestrian injuries.
